Oromia News Network is an independent media outlet serving the Oromo and Horn of African region and it’s Diaspora. onn.host is also a source of vast information through visually recorded information about the Horn of Africa’s largest nation, Oromo, and their country Oromia. The Oromo nation constitutes close to 50% of the peoples in Ethiopia. We believe a population that constitutes roughly 50 million people can no longer be marginalized and continue to suffer under past, current or future Ethiopian regimes. Thus, Oromia News Netwrk  believes the best way to disseminate informative content to the Oromo community and Africa in general is by ensuring information is widely available. As a result our core purpose of Oromia News Netwrk  is to bridge the digital divide and bring written news content with independent television based news, vies and entertainment to the forefront of the Oromo and other East African communities throughout the world. While we understand this is not an easy task we strive to insure up to date information is widely distributed to all seeking informative news. We take pride in carrying the Oromo name and believe that they have suffered for more than a century under brutal regimes in Ethiopia. Therefore, we want to ensure the world is knowledgeable not only about the untold atrocities, but also the pride that resonates deep within the Oromo community for their contribution to a well documented indigenous and democratic form of governance (Gadaa System) which continues to be practiced in some parts of Oromia to this day. We strive to ensure our contents are fair, balanced, and accurate. We welcome suggestions from visitors of this site and look forward to starting a dialogue that addresses the concerns of the audience

A state of emergency has brought calm to Ethiopia. But don’t be fooled December 24, 2016 in Oromia tA state of emergency has brought calm to Ethiopia. But don’t be fooled By Paul Schemm A state of emergency has brought calm to Ethiopia. But don’t be fooled People from the Oromo group block a road in Ethiopia after protesters were shot dead by security forces in Wolenkomi, about 35 miles west of Addis Ababa in December 2015. (AFP/Getty Images) METI, Ethiopia (The Washington Post) — Earlier this month, hundreds of high school students in the small Ethiopian town of Meti gathered for a demonstration. They were supposed to be celebrating the country’s Nations and Nationalities day, which commemorates the much-vaunted equality of Ethiopia’s 80 ethnic groups. Instead, they defied a two-month-old state of emergency to voice their anger over stalled political reforms and endemic corruption. The protest was quickly dispersed and arrests were made, locals said, and calm returned to the village. But the incident is a sign of the simmering resentment that threatens to shatter Ethiopia’s enforced quiet. The United States, one of Ethiopia’s biggest backers, is urging the government to address the widespread dissatisfaction and open up the country’s politics before it is too late. “We feel it has reached an inflection point where some hard decisions are going to have to be made,” said Tom Malinowski, the assistant secretary of state for human rights, in an interview during a recent visit to the capital, Addis Ababa. “Otherwise, a lot of the achievements could be jeopardized, and we know from the country’s history what a true crisis could look like.” [A year after Obama’s visit, Ethiopia is in turmoil] It is difficult to overstate the importance of Ethiopia to Africa’s stability. It has the continent’s second-largest population — nearly 100 million people — one of its fastest growing economies and a powerful military that helps stabilize a string of troubled countries around it. The United States — and many other countries — have invested extensively in aid programs to help the Ethiopian government wrest the country out of poverty and bring it to middle-income status. If it succeeds — and becomes a democracy as well — it could be a model for developing nations everywhere. Ethiopia has witnessed double-digit growth in the past decade. But this rapid economic expansion has resulted in strains, especially when new factories and commercial farms are being built on land taken from farmers. The central Oromo region, which has historically felt marginalized — despite having the largest segment of the population and some of the richest farmland — has been particularly hard hit.

    Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa:

‘No regrets’ over Rio protest

January 4, 2017 in Oromia Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa: ‘No regrets’ over Rio protest Jan 4 (BBC News) — Ethiopian athlete Feyisa Lilesa caught the world’s attention when he raised his arms in solidarity with the Oromo people as he crossed the finishing line at the Rio Olympic games. Five months later, now living in exile in the US, he’s been telling the BBC’s Julian Keane about the price he has had to pay for speaking out. Feyisa Lilesa: Ethiopia’s Olympic protester hopes to compete for his country Ethiopia's Feyisa Lilesa: 'No regrets' over Rio protest The ‘X’ sign is used as a symbol of protest in Ethiopia Jan 4 (BBC News) — Ethiopian Olympic marathon runner Feyisa Lilesa still hopes to compete for his country – despite being exiled since last summer’s Games. Lilesa has been living in the US on a temporary visa after making an anti-government gesture when he finished in second place in Rio. He believes his life would be in danger if he returned to his homeland. “I’ve always wanted to run for my country and for my people,” the 26-year-old told BBC World Service.    “I would like to see myself in a country where the current government is removed and the people get freedom, so I can run for my country – not for a different country.” Listen to Feyisa Lilesa’s interview with BBC World Service What started Ethiopia’s wave of protests? Back in August, Lilesa became the first Ethiopian to finish in the top two of a men’s Olympics marathon since 2000, claiming silver behind Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge. As he crossed the line, Lilesa lifted his arms in an X-shape above his head in solidarity with the Oromo people, the country’s largest ethnic group, who have suffered a crackdown at the hands of the Ethiopian government. The country’s officials said the runner would be welcomed home from Rio as a hero, but Lilesa said he might be killed if he returned. A funding campaign was launched to help pay his legal fees and support his wife and children back home, whom he has not seen since before the Olympics. “I have no regrets about doing what I did in Rio,” said Lilesa. “I would rather regret not doing anything. I know my family is living far away from me, and that might be a problem, but my family could have been one of those families who was shot dead in the street. “I miss my wife and children but this is no more of a problem than the Oromo people face. Compared to other people, this is not a problem for me. She knows I might get killed if I went back so it’s OK living far away from her.” A special visa was issued to Lilesa so he can live and train in the US, but he insists he has no plans to stay there permanently. He added: “Since my wish is to one day go back to my own country, I will remain in this country as long as my visa allows. I have no intention to ask for asylum.”
